Sedona, Arizona is a 3 ½ hour drive from Downtown Tucson. Driving alongside Sedona’s red sandstone formations is a sight you will not forget. Although there is a familiar feel of the southwest, Sedona offers a different type of breathtaking beauty with its large canyons and colored rocks. Following are five things to do in Sedona with your family or friends.
1. Hike Devil’s Bridge.
A hike that is well worth it is the moderate climb up to Devil’s Bridge. The name is more daunting than the hike. It is only 4 miles round trip to reach the natural stone arch and get back to the parking area. Hikers can choose to walk across the steep bridge for an incredible view and adventurous photo. Many children were atop the bridge and capable of keeping up on the trail. A Red Rock Pass is required to park anywhere in Red Rock Country. The parking pass is to be displayed in the car’s windshield while at the surrounding state parks. You can purchase a daily pass ($5), weekly pass ($15), or annual pass ($20).
2. Slide Rock State Park.
Named one of “America’s 10 Best State Parks” by TripAdvisor, Slide Rock State Park is located just seven miles north of downtown Sedona. Within the cool creek are natural water slides that easily slip you down through the smooth sandstone and drop you off into deeper swimming holes. Along Oak Creek Canyon are multiple spots to slide, swim, or dive! If you are daring, there are 10, 30 and 50 ft. cliff jumps into the water!
3. Seek adventure on a Jeep Tour.
There are many jeep and hummer tours to choose from in Sedona. The best online deal we found was from the locally owned Sedona Offroad Adventures. They also have various packages that include jeep, hummer, wine, vortex, horseback, and helicopter tours. Tours range from 1 to 6 hours, depending on the package. With the jeep tours, you can choose between a very scenic, pavement, rugged or historic ride. The rugged jeep ride rock crawls through the Coconino National Forest. The tour guide will pick you up in Uptown Sedona, discuss local traditions along the way, and stop for pictures. They are accommodating to any driving requests.
4. Enjoy Shopping, Dining, and Art.
Sedona Center is a great place to pick up travel souvenirs with the many stores that sell jewelry, clothing, and art pieces.
Gedion Galleries- African Art Collectables is owned by the well-known artist Gedion Nyanhongo whose art is featured in the Phoenix Zoo. Gedion is a brilliant stone sculptor who brought the tradition and materials to Sedona from Zimbabwe. Gedion carves stone in front of his gallery in Sedona, allowing visitors to stop and appreciate his handcrafted work.
Canyon Breeze is a casual restaurant that offers American and Mexican foods. Pick a table outside to overlook the red rock formations. The kid’s menu has grilled cheese, chicken strips, and sandwiches.
Tlaquepaque Arts & Crafts Village is an upscale shopping experience. It has specialty shops, art galleries, and elegant dining choices. You'll find the latest in designer clothing, jewelry and accessories.
5. Take in the view at Sedona Airport Overlook.
Airport Road is a popular spot for tourists to view the sun setting behind the red rocks of Sedona. There are two paved viewing areas that are elevated to overlook the town. Many bring their cameras to capture the colorful night skies.
