Flandrau Science Center & Planetarium is excited to be hosting the fourth annual “Chess & Science Festival” on Saturday, December 3, 2016 from 9:00am to 5:00pm.
The festival will feature an All-Girls Chess Tournament, PLUS demonstrations and activities by UA student science clubs.
Admission to the festival is $3/person. That fee includes all exhibits, activities, and planetarium shows!
The event will showcase how girls and women can excel in fields that have traditionally been male-dominated, like chess and science.
Festival organizer and 3-time US Women’s Chess Champion Anjelina Belakovskaia described the mission in this way, “We are striving to organize a special and memorable event that will have a long-lasting positive influence on participants, parents, and observers by promoting girls’ confidence and ability to compete in intellectual areas and achieve great success in chess and beyond – including math, science, finance, business, and life!”
Several UA student clubs will provide fun science activities – including the MathCats, the UA Biochemistry Club, the Neuroscience Club with their “brain zoo,” the Chemistry Club, the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, and the CATalyst Club math outreach group. Hands-on demonstrations from the Marine Discovery and Earth Science Discovery programs will also delight visitors of all ages.
You can sign up girls (K-12) for the Tournament here. There are scholarship spots available for girls who need financial assistance.
Please Note: There will be a special schedule of planetarium shows during the Chess & Science Festival. The regular Saturday schedule of shows will resume at 5pm.
