On May 5 1862, General Ignacio Zaragoza led the Mexican army to victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla. Ever since that date, an annual celebration has been held on May 5. "Cinco de Mayo" means "the 5th of May" in Spanish.
Interestingly, this holiday is more widely recognized in the United States than it is in Mexico. People gather together on this day to celebrate the Mexican-American culture.
