City on a Hill: The Journey of the Pilgrims is the result of a collaborative effort to produce a meaningful program for the community in honor of Thanksgiving. It began as a compilation of songs, skits, and poetry woven together with narration and eventually grew into a full musical production with costumes and sets as well as original music. It chronicles the arduous journey of the Pilgrims from England to Holland and finally the New World in their desperate search for a land where they could worship God freely and raise their children accordingly. It celebrates the miraculous friendship with the Native Americans that ultimately saved the Pilgrims, and it emphasizes the essence of Thanksgiving and its importance as a national holiday.
The cast originally consisted of members of the Gatekeepers, a musical outreach group from Ironwood Hills Church who participated in writing and developing the script and accompanying music. Over the years, others have participated in various roles as the production has expanded.
The show is directed by Juan Aguirre who has been very instrumental in the professional development of this production from its earliest beginnings. His invaluable teaching, expertise, and encouragement have helped us realize the potential in an idea with such humble expectations.
The vision is to present an engaging musical presentation of a historical event that encourages our community to hope in the midst of extreme hardship, that educates and inspires the next generation to believe for the impossible, and that reminds us of the original vision to be a “city on a hill.”
