The documentary film “Earthrise,” about the famous photo that first showed planet Earth above the horizon of the Moon, tells the story of this iconic image and the effect it had on human history. The photo was captured by one of the Apollo 8 astronauts on Christmas Eve (December 24) 1968. This was before Neil Armstrong ever set foot on the moon during the Apollo 11 mission in 1969.
Newly released in this 50thanniversary year of the famous photo, this timely 30-minute documentary film by director Emmanuel Vaughan-Lee brings us the voices of the Apollo 8 astronauts as they recount their experiences and memories of their trip around the Moon. These are the men who gazed in awe at grandeur of our bright blue Earth against the vast blackness of space.
The Earthrise photograph had an everlasting impact on the astronauts and on humanity, offering a powerful perspective that transcended national, political, and religious boundaries. The photograph enabled humankind to see our Earth as one ecosystem, and helped launch the environmental movement. It is one of the most iconic and widely distributed images in history. Offering an opportunity to remember this shift in our shared identity, the photograph compels us to reflect on the Earth as a shared home at this unprecedented time in history.
Come experience this fascinating story, a milestone in space exploration and our understanding of our planet Earth.
