Free First Thursday at Tucson Museum of Art

Join TMA in celebrating the cultural influences of immigrant and refugee artists in our community!
The evening will feature a performance by Tucson Capoeira – United Capoeira Association and music by Fadi Iskandar (Syria) on violin, Anton Shekerdziev (Bulgaria) on vocals, ghaida, bazouki, and guitar, and Khalid El Boujami (Morocco) on vocals, oud, banjo, and percussion.
Get creative with art-making activities lead by TMA educators and Owl & Panther. Tours of the Museum’s exhibitions will be offered in Spanish and Arabic! Marwa Alfandi Syrian Sweets and food will also be available for purchase (cash only).
Two projects will also be displayed during the evening:
Sanctuary Benches developed by TMA and Literacy Connects with Robison Elementary School, Imago Dei Middle School, Tucson, Raices Taller 222 Art Gallery and Workshop, Lutheran Social Services of the Southwest and artists Leonardo Maturana and Tony Kuya.
Dismantling Fear: Voices of Tucson’s Refugee Community is a collaborative and interdisciplinary project funded by The University of ArizonaConfluencenter for Creative Inquiry, which aims to document and share stories of refugees who are members of the Tucson community. The project members are Joseph Farbrook (School of Art), Lisa Hochtritt (School of Art), Orhon Myadar (School of Geography and Development), and Stephanie Troutman (Department of English).
