Science & Chess Festival at Flandrau Science Center & Planetarium

November 24, 2019 @ 9:00 am - 5:00 pm

Flandrau Science Center & Planetarium is excited to be hosting the annual “Chess & Science Festival” on Sunday, November 24, 2019. Admission to Flandrau and all exhibits will be free all day! The festival will feature an All-Female Chess Tournament, activities provided by UA student science clubs, a free movie screening, and a greeting from the Mayor of Tucson, Jonathan Rothschild, at 11:30.

Visitors can also enjoy Flandrau’s hands-on science exhibits, awe-inspiring laser light music shows, and the glittering gemstones and minerals in the University of Arizona Mineral Museum, all for free during Chess Fest! Laser music shows will include Laser Stranger Things featuring 1980s songs from the hit Netflix show, iPop featuring hit songs from stars like Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez, and Laser Queen featuring favorite songs from the rock group Queen with lead singer Freddie Mercury.

The festival showcases how girls and women can excel in fields that have historically been male-dominated, like chess and science. As festival organizer and 3-time US Women’s Chess Champion, Anjelina Belakovskaia describes the mission, “To organize a special and memorable event that will have a long-lasting positive influence on participants, parents and observers. We want to foster confidence in girls, and help them achieve great success in chess and beyond – including math, science, finance, business and life!”

The free screening of the family-friendly chess movie “A Little Game” starring Ralph Macchio will play in the Eos Foundation Planetarium Theater starting at 9:45am.

You can sign up girls and women of all ages for the Chess Tournament here: http://chessandsciencefestival.com/. There are scholarship spots available for girls who need financial assistance.

The event will begin at 9am and run until 5pm. We hope you’ll bring your girls and boys to join the fun at this celebration of chess and science!
