The 44th Annual Tucson Meet Yourself Folklife Festival features over 50 food booths, amazing performers, folk artists, exhibits, and activities for all ages.
Tucson Meet Yourself Folklife Festival 2017 Highlights
- The Loft Cinema’s Festival Films on Friday & Saturday nights of the festival. Relevant scholars will offer introductions and context for each film. Films include The Eagle Huntress & Moana.
- Masters of Traditional Arts Exhibit featuring 10 master traditional artists, all recipients of the Southwest Folklife Alliance’s annual Master-Apprentice Artist Award.
- Guest Performers PHIL WIGGINS, master of acoustic harmonica in the Piedmont blues tradition and NEA National Heritage Fellow; JUNIOUS BRICKHOUSE, dancer/choreographer of urban dance forms; JULIA GUTIERREZ-RIVERA, premiere dancer of Bomba y Plena, a traditional Puerto Rican dance form; SONORA LIRICO, a lyrical opera quartet from Hermosillo, Mexico offering an homage to famous Mexican balladeer Juan Gabriel; LONE PINON, an acoustic trio from Northern New Mexico reviving Chicano stringband styles such as polka, chote, huapango, and classic borderlands conjunto.
- TMY After Hours on Sunday evening. “Fiesta Flamenca,” featuring soulful flamenco performances honoring the traditions of Spain, Mexico, and Southern Arizona at EXO Roast Co. Advanced registration required, suggested donation: $5-$10.
