Ballet Tucson, now in its 30th Anniversary Pearl Jubilee Season, celebrates the holidays with its annual production of The Nutcracker and its Sugar Plum Tea holiday experience.
Ballet Tucson’s beloved production of The Nutcracker, now in its 21st magical year, has become a holiday tradition for grandparents, parents, and kids alike – from all over Southern Arizona. The timeless tale of Clara’s magical journey features giant-sized toy soldiers, swirly snowflakes, and exotic sweets and spices. Performances of The Nutcracker are December 11-13 at the University of Arizona’s Centennial Hall.
On Sunday, December 6, Ballet Tucson will host its 15th Annual Sugar Plum Tea. Confections of every kind will transform the ballroom at the Marriott University Park into a magical setting for this hallmark holiday event. Join Ballet Tucson artists along with the Sugar Plum Fairy, Clara, and other characters from The Nutcracker ballet in celebrating the holidays with sights and sounds of the season and delights for the whole family. The festivities will also include a holiday marketplace and exceptional silent auction of gifts and treasures, benefitting Ballet Tucson.
Live musical entertainment at the Sugar Plum Tea includes the Tucson Arizona Boys Chorus and Harpist Christine Vivona. Special guest artist Grayson Hirst will perform and narrate the story of The Nutcracker with characters from the ballet and a live performance by Ballet Tucson’s talented professional dancers. Mr. Hirst is an alumnus of, among others, the Metropolitan Opera Studio and the Juilliard School. The New York Times has called Grayson Hirst “a stylish singer with a naturally beautiful voice” – “a tenor of acknowledged intelligence and good taste.”
There will be two seatings for high tea; 11:00 am and 3:00 pm. Tickets are $75 per person. For reservations, visit the Ballet Tucson website at BalletTucson.org/special-events or call Ballet Tucson at (520) 903-1445.
