Mildred & Dildred is a small, locally-owned toy store in North Tucson. Located on the lower level of La Encantada shopping center, the whimsical turquoise building with bright red doors and airy glass displays features toys and games for youngsters. You’ll find rag dolls, puppets, arts & crafts supplies, books by local authors, tea sets, play kitchens, and more. Most of the items are geared to babies up to about age 8, but older children (and even adults!) will also find puzzles, books, games, and decor that will appeal to them.
Though the store isn’t big in space (1600 square feet), it makes up for it in character. The employees are helpful, kid-friendly, and “goofy” (their words – not ours). Plus, the store features a monthly Music Hour with Mr. Nature on the front lawn. You can stay up-to-date on events and sales by subscribing to the Mildred & Dildred e-newsletter.
Prices tend to be on the steep side, but the selection is top-notch and the store is locally-owned. Autumn Ruhe, a Tucson native, set up shop in 2007 after getting a degree in art history and working at Mrs. Tiggy-Winkles (a toy store in Tucson that closed in 2011).
If you go, be sure to check the giant wooden cradle by the check-out counter for sale items!
