Restaurant Review: Pita Jungle

pita-jungle

The three founders of Pita Jungle come from diverse backgrounds. In 1994, they left engineering and broadcasting to open a restaurant  "where the food was fresh and healthy, and the people were fun and creative."

Now with 18 locations across Arizona and California, they call Pita Jungle "a dream come true" and a restaurant that is "a little bit off the beaten path."

LOCATIONS

There is currently one Pita Jungle in Tucson at 5340 E. Broadway Blvd (opened in 2011), but a second location at Oracle & Ina is set to open later this year.

HOURS & MENU

Open 7 days a week between 10:30am and 10:00pm, the atmosphere is casual and modern with artwork on the walls. The menu, described as "healthful Mediterranean," includes salads, pitas, burgers, wood fired pizzas, and seafood. Vegetarian and vegan options are also available.

Current specials include Chicken Curry Salad, Hummus with Sirloin, and Wood-Fired Trout.

For dessert, you'll find Baklawa (of course!) - or you can opt for Turtle Cheesecake, Carrot Cake, Rice Pudding, or a Smoothie.

FOR THE KIDS

The Kid's Menu is particularly innovative. Kids choose one item from four different categories (fruits, vegetables, grains and carbs, and protein). The portions are large and one meal could easily be split between two little ones. No worries if your child doesn't like one of the items - they'll still be three other healthful foods on their plates (think turkey, pasta, steamed carrots, fresh fruit, tofu, pita crisp, etc). The $4.99 price also includes a drink in a branded plastic cup.

Highchairs, paper menus, and crayons are available for young diners - and patio seating with misters is available if you prefer the more casual ambiance of being out of doors.
