American Red Cross

The American Red Cross prevents and alleviates human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors.​

  • Location: 2916 E Broadway Blvd, Tucson, AZ 85716
  • Teen Volunteer Opportunities: A variety of positions are available for teens. For example, Donor Ambassadors are the first face of the Red Cross at blood drives. They welcome and register blood donors, manage the donor flow for the day, and provide the canteen services. Other positions include clerical positions supporting the disaster cycle services response program as well as support for the Service to the Armed forces program.
  • Age Minimum for Volunteering without a Parent: 16 years old for most positions with some limited administrative volunteer opportunities for 15 year olds
  • Age Minimum for Volunteering with a Parent: For BioMedical services, the minimum is 15 years old with a parent. At 16, they can volunteer solo. Children, 13 years of age and older, can also take part in smoke alarm installation events with their parent or guardian where the Red Cross walks neighborhoods, installing free smoke alarms.
  • Training Requirements: Getting started is easy. Create your volunteer profile. Once that’s done, you’ll have access to all of the current volunteer opportunities and you’ll just apply to ones that interest you the most. 
  • Weekly/Monthly Commitment: The majority of volunteer opportunities are ongoing and require at least a monthly commitment. One exception is the Summer Youth Corp program. These youth pledge to help out at least 10 blood drives during their summer break and those who successfully complete the program receive a certificate and a letter of recommendation from the Red Cross.
  • Internships/Leadership: One great opportunity for teens to take on a leadership role is to host a blood drive at their school. As the point of contact, the youth volunteer will be responsible for setting up the blood drive and ensuring its success. It is a huge responsibility that will help them develop and test a variety of leadership skills.

Child Evangelism Fellowship Christian Youth In Action | 20+ Places for Teens to Volunteer in Tucson

The mission of Child Evangelism Fellowship is to:
1. Evangelize boys and girls with the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ
2. Establish or disciple boys and girls in the Word of God
3. Enfold boys and girls in a local church for Christian living

  • Teen Volunteer Opportunities: In the summer, there are two opportunities for teens. The first opportunity is Christian Youth in Training. The students who participate must be believers in Christ with a desire to learn how to teach children. The program is geared for students who are in middle school. They will be serving for two weeks as helpers in 5 Day Clubs. The second summer opportunity is Christian Youth in Action. This training camp is typically held in Prescott Arizona in May or June. The students who participate must be believers in Christ with a desire to learn how to teach children in 5 Day Clubs. During four days of camps, they will teach children in the Prescott area with an adult mentor. Every student who participates must come with the commitment to teach two weeks of 5 Day Clubs in Pima County this summer. 
  • Age Minimum for Volunteering without a Parent: Teens who are part of the summer ministry program will be chaperoned by another adult when they are doing ministry. These students will be middle school or high school age. Parents do not need to be with them, but they may need to give students a ride to the carpool location. During the school year, teens who are 15yrs. or older may serve on a Good News Club team with another adult present.
  • Age Minimum for Volunteering with a Parent: Middle school students are welcome to serve at the CEF office with their parents. Families are welcome to volunteer together doing yard work or office maintenance. Families may open their home for a 5 Day Club during the summer. Middle school volunteers may also assist with mailing preparation.
  • Training Requirements: All volunteers with CEF who are 18 years or older must be screened for child protection. They need to carefully read CEF's Statement of Faith and be in agreement with it. An online application is required for students who desire to serve in CYIT or CYIA. References are required in this application process.
  • Weekly/Monthly Commitment: Students in summer ministry with CEF will attend several pre-training classes before summer begins. They will need to be available every day of their training and be committed to serve two weeks following training. High school students who serve in Good News Clubs during the school year must be available for 1 and 1/2 hours a week and will serve from September-April.

Christian Family Care's mission is to strengthen families and serve at-risk children in the name of Jesus Christ.

  • Location: Christian Family Care Tucson Offices can be found at 6063 E. Grant Road, Tucson, AZ 85712. The CFC Thrift Store is currently at 1066 S. Pantano Rd. Tucson. After May, the CFC Thrift Store will be located at 7667 E Speedway Blvd.
  • Teen Volunteer opportunities: Teens can help at the Thrift Store. The Thrift Store supports the organization's “Safe Families” program, which is dedicated to foster care prevention.

Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona

The Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona strives to address the root causes of hunger. They believe that access to safe, sufficient, nutritious food is a basic human right, and that empowered people and their communities thrive.

  • Location: The warehouse and garden are at 3003 S. Country Club Rd (Country Club and 36th Street). Las Milpitas de Cottonwood Farm is at 2405 S. Cottonwood Lane (near A mountain).
  • Volunteer opportunities: Volunteers are welcome on Saturday mornings from 7:00am-10:00am at Las Milpitas Community Farm. There are also opportunities for volunteers, ages 16 and older, to help in bagging and distributing food at 3003 S. Country Club from 8:00am – 1:00pm on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings. Volunteers must register beforehand.

Diaper Bank of Southern Arizona Teen Volunteers

The Diaper Bank of Southern Arizona exists to "make diapers, incontinence supplies, and period products available in times of need through collaborative community relationships." They envision a community "where diapers, incontinence supplies, and period products are always available to those who need them."

GAP Ministries exists to "Stand in the GAP for those in need, bringing HELP to Children, HEALING to Families, and HOPE to our Community."

  • Teen Volunteer opportunities: Teen volunteers can assist in the Community Warehouse during the summer and on school breaks, Mon-Fri, between the hours of 9:00am-3:00pm. Tasks might include sorting, organizing, pricing, putting things on the shelf for nonprofits to receive, light cleaning. Teen volunteers may also help off-campus at the Treasures & More Resale Store (Pima & Craycroft). Store hours are Tues-Sat, 9:00am-5:00pm.

The Gratitude Crew is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to teaching youth volunteers how to practice gratitude and how to empower others to focus on gratitude. "We are committed to facilitating Gratitude Groups with the elderly and in the community helping individuals to overcome the negative effects of the fear based media, the culture of hate, and the complexity of our own inner dialogues."

More Than A Bed Tucson Teen Volunteer Opportunities Adoption | 20+ Places for Teens to Volunteer in Tucson

More Than a Bed's mission is to support foster, kinship, and adoptive families and the children in their homes by providing for practical needs. Specifically, those practical needs include anything a family might need to care for a child (baby items, diapers, strollers, cribs, beds, clothing, shoes, houseware goods, books, blankets, etc).

  • Location: 3637 North 1st Avenue, Tucson, Arizona 85719
  • Teen Volunteer Opportunities: Volunteer opportunities include: (A) Cleaning donated shoes so they appear new for the children to have. The work area is heated/cooled and this would be a sitting job. (B) Sorting clothes. Verify if the clothing is appropriate for foster kids to wear (no skulls, skimpy tops, negative images, stained clothing, rips in jeans...) then sorting based on gender and size. Everything else goes into other bins for other partner missions. (C) Hanging clothing that will be saved for other seasons/holidays. (D) Organize Household Items in the warehouse - blankets, books, toys, baby formula. (E) Pod attendant - there are 2 shipping pods outside the warehouse that hold larger items (beds, cribs, mattresses, car seats). If a family needs a bed, for example, teens can help retrieve the bed and give it to the family. (F) Special Events.
  • Age Minimum for Volunteering without a Parent: Ages 17+. Background checks are required so the teen will need to have a photo ID /driver's license.  
  • Age Minimum for Volunteering with a Parent: Children (ages 6+) are welcome to serve with their parents. Young children can be very helpful with cleaning toys, organizing hangers, sorting stuffed animals, and hanging clothes.
  • Training Requirements: A background check is conducted if the volunteer doesn't have a level one fingerprint clearance card. All volunteers fill out a record that indicates the time they volunteer. 
  • Weekly/Monthly Commitment: More Than A Bed is open Tues, Thurs, & Fri from 8:30am - 1:30pm and the 3rd Saturday of the month from 8:30am-1:30pm. Volunteers may help out on a weekly or monthly basis.

Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southern Arizona, a nonprofit 501(c)(3), provides comfort and support to families and children facing serious illness or injury. The Ronald McDonald House provides a "Home Away from Home" for families who must travel to Tucson for medical care. The 24,000 square foot house has 28 bedrooms and private bathrooms, 4 kitchens, a reading room, great room, playroom, and outdoor play area. The House serves over 600 families per year from communities throughout Southern Arizona, as well as the surrounding region.

The Salvation Army

The Salvation Army, an international movement, is an evangelical part of the Universal Christian Church. Its message is based on the Bible. Its ministry is motivated by the love of God. Its mission is to preach the gospel of the love of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination. Programs include an adult rehabilitation center, hospitality house shelter, emergency disaster services, and numerous community centers.

  • Volunteer opportunities: Volunteers are especially needed during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays to set up, serve and dish out food, clean up, and decorate for Thanksgiving and Christmas meals. Assistance is also needed with food drives and toy drives. The Salvation Army is also looking for groups of people to do volunteer bell ringing from Nov 21-Dec 24.

The Sonoran Desert Weedwackers

The Sonoran Desert Weedwackers' mission is to restore healthy desert habitat by manually removing buffelgrass and other invasive species. "We do this with hard-working volunteers, collaborative partnerships, and decades of mapping data."

Tu Nidito Children & Family Services

Tu Nidito Children and Family Services exists to create a community of acceptance and understanding regarding children in grief. 

  • Location: 3922 N. Mountain Ave (between 1st & Campbell)
  • Volunteer opportunities: Direct Care Volunteers work directly with children, teens, and/or caregivers impacted by serious medical condition or death. Direct Volunteers must be at least 16 years old, complete all required paperwork, participate in all required training, pass a background check, and make a minimum commitment of 1 year. In-Direct Care Volunteers work behind the scenes to ensure all  programs have the administrative and financial support they need to be successful. In-Direct Volunteer roles vary widely but include: Office Volunteers, Special Events, specialized group projects, and select Internships.

  • Age Minimum for Volunteering with a Parent: Families can volunteer together, but group projects are limited and offered on an as-needed basis.
