School Spotlight: University High School

university-high-school

Established in 1976, University High School is "a rigorous, regional college preparatory school that serves academically-focused and intellectually-gifted students by providing curriculum and social support that educate the whole student."

High school graduation requirements include 4 years of English, 4 years of Math, 4 years of Social Studies, 3 years of Science, 2 years of World Languages, 1 year of Fine Arts, 1 year of P.E. – plus electives. All academic courses at UHS are Honors or Advanced Placement (AP).

UHS ia an academically-selective high school [there are no geographic restrictions]. Admission is based on applicants' qualifying scores on the Cognitive Abilities entrance examination and grad point averages for the two semesters prior to enrollment. For the 2013-14 school year, 1,792 students tested for entrance; 400 of those were extended offers of admission.

100% of students graduate and 99% matriculate to four-year universities. Students go on to attend Harvard, Reed, Stanford, U of A, Calvin, and others.

It is important to note that UHS shares a campus with the 1,148 students of Rincon High School (a previously "failing" school). Students are separated for all academic classes and lunch, but participate in clubs and sports together.
