Running in Tucson from January 14-February 4, Afred Hitchcock’s The 39 Steps is a must-see theatrical event! As the Arizona Theatre Company describes it: “Mix a Hitchcock masterpiece with a juicy spy novel, add a dash of Monty Python and you have … Alfred Hitchcock’s The 39 Steps.”
With a cast of only 4 — who play an unbelievable 150 different characters over the course of the 2 hour play — The 39 Steps is a fast-paced, side-splitting spy adventure.
One day in 1935 Richard Hannay, a fairly average London bachelor, meets a beautiful woman at the theater…only to have her die in his arms a few hours later. Now wanted as a murderer, Hannay flees toward Scotland in a desperate attempt to clear his name and catch the mysterious men involved in her death. Along the way Hannay meets a slew of characters — from a crotchety Bible-thumping Highlands farmer, to a Scottish politician with an unpronounceable name, to the beautiful goody-two-shoes Pamela.
The cast does an amazing job portraying all these different characters, and even manage to make scene changes amusing — since a lot of the rapid costume and set changes become a part of the plot as they go. And the audience is in on the joke, making their deadpan switches from character to character in a matter of seconds even funnier.
Fans of Hitchcock, Monty Python, and great small theatre productions will all be enchanted by The 39 Steps! Ticket prices range from $35 to $52.
